LifeHacker.com posted a great article about backyard grilling and I really wanted to share the meat and potatoes of it with my readers. I am a big fan of the grill and love nothing more than enjoying the savoury taste of a thick and juicy sirloin steak - especially if I grilled it myself. Now some people frown upon adding spices to a steak, but I can't help loading my meat up with Montreal Steak spice. This wonderful blend of spices really draws out the flavour of the meat, while adding a little kick of its own. So take note of the following tips and tricks, and check out the full article if you want to know more.
Get the right tools
- Briquettes are easier than lump charcoal for the novice
- Get a grill made with good quality steal (a magnet won't stick to it)
- Shake the hell out of it, stability is important
- Get a set of long handle utensils with tongs, spatula, carving type poker, brush, grilling basket, and skewers
- Keep a spare propane tank handy - running out sucks.
Getting Ready
- Clean the grill
- Make your own sauce
Hone your technique
- Get a cheat sheet
- Don't press burgers into the grill
- Salt your steak
- Don't cut into your meat!
Document your success
- Write down what works well
- Take some pictures
Backyard grilling is an excellent way to enjoy the summer (or year round if you are like me) and a great way to break free of the kitchen. I like my kitchen as much as the next guy, but something about cooking outside makes preparing meals much more enjoyable. I like to turn up the tunes and setup a comfy chair near the grill, it helps me relax after a long day at work. You don't have to take my word for it. Try it out for yourself!
