Hunter Education and Canadian Firearms Training

May 22, 2008 23:42 by norm

aim4safety Well, I did the unthinkable.  I went ahead and passed my Hunter Education and Canadian Firearms exams on the weekend.  The Hunter Education is a must for hunting in Ontario.  You can challenge the exam if you don't want to take the training, but the training is well worth it.  In total I spent three days at the Firearms Education School.  The first day was focused at the Canadian Firearms written examinations.  We spent the day learning about non-restricted firearms (muzzle loaders, rifles, and shotguns) and how to handle them safely.  At 5pm, most of the class left and a few of us stayed behind to do our Restricted firearm training.  Restricted firearms are generally handguns (semi-auto and revolver).  I aced both of those written exams.  Woohoo!

All of that took place on the Saturday before last.  The next weekend I spent both Saturday and Sunday there.  On Saturday we went through the Hunter Education and safety course.  The scope of the training was very broad.  Everything from laws and ethical practices, to concepts and methodologies.  I also aced this test.  I was on a roll.  Sunday was a bit of a review day and the practical examinations for the Canadian Firearms testing.  These tests involved demonstrating safe handling of both restricted and non-restricted firearms (only because I signed up for both).  When all was said and done, I had scored 100% on each of those exams.  It was a great feeling of achievement and accomplishment.

The courses ran me $235 for the non-restricted firearms and hunter education (one-stop), and an additional $76 for the restricted firearms course and testing.  Not a bad deal at all for anyone interesting in getting into the sport.  Whether you want to hunt, or just shoot at the range, these courses are a must.  If you live in the Niagara Peninsula, make sure you remember Firearms Education School for all of your educational needs.  John Kellaway runs the school, with his wife Barb.  You can reach them by:
