Ok, the topic of this post is going to be something that I would deem the coolest thing I have seen in a long time. I'm not sure who the builder is, but believe me when I tell you that I would gladly give share his name and the obvious respect that it deserves. This guy has built something that he refers to as the 'Emergency Party Button'. The name says it all. He's created a very slick and industrial looking wireless button that, upon activation, immediately converts is typical suburban apartment into the ultimate dance club. You really have to see it to believe it.
The button itself is very impressive. It's a very large, red, mushroom type button that requires a key to activate. I've attached a picture of it to the post. The button and it's associated components operate on X10 hardware. It's basically a set of modules that communicate through power lines. For example, you can rig up one X10 remote control and attach it to several X10 components. In some cases it's as simple as plugging the X10 module into the wall, then plugging the appliance (maybe a lamp?) into the module. You can also screw an X10 module into a light socket, then the bulb into the module. In other cases, it may get a little more complex in that you might have to replace a wall switch or plug for an X10 controllable one. This mad scientist even found an X10 motor to control the vertical blinds. Genius, sheer genius.
For more information, check out the Emergency Party Button website - you will not be disappointed. The site has tons of pictures and information that clearly define how he built the whole rig. There is also a demonstration video that shows the button in use, in addition to what happens when you shut it down.
