I could probably talk about Code Monkey for days and still come up with good things to say about it. "It?" you ask, as your curiosity peeks. Code Monkey is a brilliant song written by Jonathan Coulton, a code monkey turned entertainer. The song depicts a stereotypical "Standard Nerd", who works the daily grind at a software development company. His motivation to stay is love. Sounds sappy, doesn't it? I first stumbled upon this song in the spring of 2007 whilst surfing YouTube for funny videos to amuse myself with, in the absence of motivation to work. It all started here... Check it out, you won't be disappointed!
I must have watched the video 10 times that night. I think that my girlfriend thought I had gone mad. It was just so easy to relate to. Now, up until that night I always used "code monkey" as a derogatory term to label those people who simply pound the keyboard without giving a second thought to what they are coding or why. You know who I mean; every software shop has at least one. The coder who codes up a storm, hammers out code 3x as fast as anyone else, but it is all shit. Performance degrading, unmanaged, poorly written crap. Naturally after seeing this video, I rethought how I was using the term. Most people in IT will be able to relate to this song, with particular thanks going to the folks who created this excellent video for your YouTubing pleasure.
Jonathan did a great job in capturing the hearts of IT professionals everywhere. I strongly recommend visiting
his site, as he a collection of great music and misc. Code Monkey gear that you can purchase.
