New Xbox 360 Dashboard, Still No DivX

November 20, 2008 20:45 by norm

xbox-360-logo Microsoft has officially unleashed the Xbox Experience, or NXE, upon Xbox 360 owners everywhere, and it's... well... interesting.

Yesterday, millions of Xbox 360 consoles were given the opportunity to "transform", as Microsoft calls it in their press release.  Personally, I'm thinking that the average user will just think of it as a new GUI.  Microsoft added a tonne of new functionality in what looks to be an effort to attract more users to the product, instead of pleasing the masses of existing users.  The new Xbox Experience contains a completely redesigned GUI that adds a more cartoony feel to the console.  I wasn't personally impressed by it.

The worst part is that the Xbox Media Center Extender still doesn't support the DivX codecs that are already on the console from the last update.

Xbox 360, Meet Smoothie

October 24, 2008 22:47 by norm

xbox-360-logo This week something truly magical happened to me, I finally acquired an Xbox 360 and let me tell you - it rocks.  I've been terrorizing Liberty City via Grand Theft Auto IV, and honing my driving skills at the track in Need For Speed: ProStreet.  One of the first things that I did was run a new network connection to my entertainment centre just for my shiny new Xbox.

My original goal for setting up the network was to play with setting up the Xbox as a media extender, and in doing so I discovered that my Xbox needed some upgrades.  Most of the content that I view with my media centre PC is DIVX/XVID encoded videos and that doesn't play very nicely with the Xbox.  There is hope though.  After doing some research, I discovered that the latest updates for the Xbox contain DIVX/XVID codecs.  Sweet.
